Essay On Virtue Ethics - 1160 Words

Virtue Ethics: The ethics of being. This week in our course in Ethics lead us to the topic of Aristotle’s Virtue Ethics. Aristotle is thought of to be the first to write about the concept of Virtue Ethics, but humanity has realized its existence before Aristotle by just living their everyday life in society. The virtues of honesty, courage, and dependability were sought after in social interactions while their respective vices of dishonesty, cowardice, and unreliability were less attractive. In living amongst one another-- much to the same scope of what is discussed in Professor Nancy Rosenblum s Good Neighbors: The Democracy of Everyday Life in America-- virtues hold their relevance in how we treat one another, and the actions of our†¦show more content†¦As I have said before Virtue Ethics are only important because we interpret and witness the virtues of others everyday in our life, and right there is where Virtue Ethics diverge from the other theories: Virtue Ethic s deal with life. If Virtue Ethics are the ethics of being, then they are the ethics that describe people; but not a person in one specific situation (as used in the hypothetical situations that defended our prior theories), but all that person’s actions used to calculate their levels of virtue. That neighbor making noise late at night is not morally evil, and the neighbors that keep to themselves could also not be perfectly virtuous, but neighbors and society are in fact determined to be in a balancing act between the two... according to Virtue Ethics. I also noticed that the Social Contract theory from last lesson is very much connected to Virtue Ethics, and even more related to the topic of good neighboring. Professor Rosenblum in the podcast spoke about this concept of Reciprocity. A neighbor engaging in reciprocity with another neighbor-- in such cases as the act of lending a ladder when it is requested, and the person that received the ladder engaging in reciprocating t hat neighbor’s action by helping the neighbor that offered the ladder with a similar act to repay the person for their initial virtuous deed-- is an act of the Social Contract’s mutual benefit. If Social Contract is to specificallyShow MoreRelatedEssay on Virtue Ethics900 Words   |  4 PagesVirtue, when I hear that word I think of value and morality and only good people can be virtuous. Hag Fishes Free Essays

My name is Khari Spencer, and I am running for treasurer. I know all of you are probably tired and bored of hearing all these speeches of people telling you to vote for them, so I hope my speech stands out to you. I think the quote â€Å"Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away,† is something we should all keep in our minds. We will write a custom essay sample on Hag Fishes or any similar topic only for you Order Now If I am elected for treasurer, I will try to make school something that you wish you could go back to. Money moves the wheels of history, and this year I will move those wheels like never before n the history of this school. Friends, desks and chairs will tremble and shake with the triumphent roar of coins and cash flowing into the hands of our excellent student council. Things will get done and we shall acquire great things for all people of all ages and classses within this family that is Paradise. Things will be done, and they will be done for -you-. As Franklin Roosevelt once said, â€Å"Happiness is not in the mere possession of money; it lies in the joy of achievement, in the thrill of creative effort. I feel that we can all embrace the joy of achieving something great this year, and I know that all of our efforts will bring a financial blessing upon the school if you elect me for student council treasurer. What would make me a good treasurer? What qualities could I possibly possess that could accord me the rights to be in any position of relative power? Behind this outer shell of awesomeness and an incredible personality lies someone who is more than capable of being meticulous. I’ve yet to overdraw my checking account (I’m saving that for college), and I actually do work out a personal budget (granted, that’s something I’m made to do, but hey. It still counts. ). This ridiculous amount of person greed and over the top focus on personal finance would make me an excellent treasurer. As for the non-financial element of the position, while it’s true I’ve never held an office, I’m a creative person, with many different ideas (even if a lot of them are ridiculous. I’m easy to talk to and I love working around and with people, so the suggestions of others would be more than welcomed. It would probably make my life a heck of a lot easier. I look forward to coming up with creative fundraising methods. I may not have a coin collection that could rival that of the US Federal Mint, nor do I have any skills at basketball. At all. Whatsoever. I do not have one thing that many of the greatest political candidates of our time all have in common: empty promises. I do not make promises that if elected, Led Zeppelin will play in the cafeteria . I do not make promises that if you vote for me, a poor African boy will be given food. I also do not make promises to embezzle only a small portion of our school funds for dubious personal use. Ultimately, one could say, this would not be something I could do alone. Whether I’m elected or not, it isn’t just the responsibility of the student government to make a fantastic school day. It comes down to all of you, even the people sitting in this room, bored out of your minds, to make this a possibility. While I’m sure that I could deal with the funds for a field trip, I certainly don’t want to pay $100 for two tickets. That’s insane. And four people can’t keep costs down while still maintaining all of the fun that is our learning time. While I’m looking to get involved in running our class’s finances and helping to organize class related events, I certainly don’t want to make all about me (only a little bit). If elected, I would ask for and regularly enlist the help of all of you. While I could attempt to commandeer this position in a bloody coop, I have chosen to take the legal route into student office. In order to win, succeed, and actually do a good job, I’ll need all of your help. I’m asking you to vote for me, and when/if I’m elected, I’m asking for you to help me and give me your input. This is, after all, about you, and not me. I’m running to work for you to make your 7th grade year as good as it can possibly How to cite Hag Fishes, Essay examples

Vladek and the Holocaust Essay Example

Vladek and the Holocaust Essay Maus is a comic book written by Art Spiegelman chronicling his father’s life through the Holocaust. Vladek is an aggravating character he’s stingy, contemptuous, and illiberal. Vladek’s irritating personality is an effect of his experiences during the Holocaust. His selfishness can be blamed upon his experiences where he had to take things to survive, even if it meant taking from others. His distrust is a result of him being betrayed on multiple accounts, and his fixation with money can be linked to how money helped him through the holocaust. The underlying traits of Vladeks personality would have always been there but the holocaust has affected him in a way to bring the aggravating characteristics to surface. Vladek’s selfish character is a side affect of his traumatic experiences where   Ã¢â‚¬Ëœevery man is for himself’. Every soul in the holocaust had to learn to put themselves before others for survival, this severely affected Vladeks character.  Vladek’s egoistic behaviour showed when he climbed onto someone’s shoulders to hang a hammock for himself to lie on, so he wouldnt be killed, or trampled when others were shoved onto the train to the concentration camp. This event in the book really mad clear the importance of putting ones self before others for survival. Vladek’s selfishness when he wanted to give Art a new coat, saying â€Å"It’s a shame my son would wear such an old shabby coat.† making clear it was shameful for his own reputation. Instead of buying Art a new coat out of love, he gave him a coat out of keeping a high image for himself.  He later says, â€Å"I have for you a warmer one. I got at Alexander’s a ne w jacket, and I can give to you my old one; it’s still like new!† This shows that Vladek did not care for arts image but only for his own, buying himself a new coat and letting art have a hand me down. Free Essays on Birches Free Essays on Birches Explication of â€Å"Birches† by Robert Frost According to the speaker and author Robert Frost, enduring life’s challenges can be easier by finding a balance between imagination and real life. The tone of the poem is nostalgic. The poem is divided into four parts: an introduction, an analysis of the bending of birch trees, an imaginative untrue analysis of the farm boy swinging on birches, and a wish Frost makes, wanting to return to his childhood. All of these sections have underlying philosophical meanings. Personification, alliteration, metaphor, and other sound devices support these meanings and themes. â€Å"Birches† exibits no rhythm sceme or specific line length which suggests it is free verse. In the first section of the poem, Frost explains the appearance of the birches. Frost wants to believe that the branches of the birches bend and sway because of a boy swinging on them. However, Frost suggests that repeated ice storms are what bend the branches. Frost compares the breaking away of the ice from the trees to the â€Å"dome of heaven† shattering (Line 13). This could be a metaphor for life using imagery. The ice can symbolize difficult times that come in life, while the ice breaking away may represent renewed hope for the future. Initially, the forest scene describes, "crystal shells Shattering and avalanching on the snow crust Such heaps of broken glass to sweep away" (10-12). The words "shattering and avalanching" (11) give the feeling of disaster and perhaps fear or sorrow. A disturbance on earth is suggested by the "heaps of broken glass" (12) that make it seem as if "the inner dome of heaven had fallen" (13). This may be a spin on the idea that problems and experiences "click" off of people, however, the click is not a snap implying that problems do not break people. Frost further explains the bra...

The Beautiful and Damned Quotes

'The Beautiful and Damned' Quotes The Beautiful and Damned is the second novel, published by F. Scott Fitzgerald. The book is about Anthony Patch, a socialite during the 1920s Jazz Age. Here are quotes from the famous classic. The Beautiful and Damned Quotes The victor belongs to the spoils. In 1913, when Anthony Patch was twenty-five, two years were already gone since irony, the Holy Ghost of this later day, had, theoretically at least, descended upon him. As you first see him he wonders frequently whether he is not without honor and slightly mad, a shameful and obscene thinness glistening on the surface of the world like oil on a clean pond, these occasions being varied, of course, with those in which he thinks himself rather an exceptional young man, thoroughly sophisticated, well adjusted to his environment, and somewhat more significant than anyone else he knows. This was his healthy state and it made him cheerful, pleasant, and very attractive to intelligent men and to all women. In this state, he considered that he would one day accomplish some quiet subtle thing that the elect would deem worthy and, passing on, would join the dimmer stars in a nebulous, indeterminate heaven half-way between death and immortality. Until the time came for this effort he would be Anthony Patch - not a portrait of a man but a distinct and dynamic personality, opinionated, contemptuous, functioning from within outward - a man who was aware that there could be no honor and yet had honor, who knew the sophistry of courage and yet was brave. To Anthony life was a struggle against death, that waited at every corner. It was as a concession to his hypochondriacal imagination that he formed the habit of reading in bed - it soothed him. He read until he was tired and often fell asleep with the lights still on. Curiously enough he found in senior year that he had acquired a position in his class. He learned that he was looked upon as a rather romantic figure, a scholar, a recluse, a tower of erudition. This amused him but secretly pleased him - he began going out, at first a little and then a great deal. Once upon a time all the men of mind and genius in the world became of one belief that is to say, of no belief. But it wearied them to think that within a few years after their death many cults and systems and prognostications would be ascribed to them which they had never meditated nor intended. Lets join together and make a great book that will last forever to mock the credulity of man. Lets persuade our more erotic poets to write about the delights of the flesh, and induce some of our robust journalists to contribute stories of famous amours. Well include all the most preposterous old wives tales now current. Well choose the keenest satirist alive to compile a deity from all the deities worshipped by mankind, a deity who will be more magnificent than any of them, and yet so weakly human that hell become a byword for laughter the world over and well ascribe to him all sorts of jokes and vanities and rages, in which hell be supposed to indulge for his own diversion, so that the people will read our book and ponder it, and therell be no more nonsense in the world. Finally, let us take care that the book possesses all the virtues of style, so that it may last forever as a witness to our profound skepticism and our universal irony. So the men did, and they died. But the book lived always, so beautifully had it been written, and so astounding the quality of imagination with which these men of mind and genius had endowed it. They had neglected to give it a name, but after they were dead it became known as the Bible.

Parsuasive speach Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

Parsuasive speach - Essay Example Scientists point to the fact that the soil on organic farms is much healthier than on farms using chemical fertilizers. Healthy soil is rich in nutrients that can be taken up and stored by the fruits and vegetables. We gain these nutrients when we consume the organic food. Another reason organically raised fruits and vegetables are superior to others is the lack of environmental damage they cause. Organic food is raised in a manner that prevents herbicides, pesticides and chemical fertilizers from polluting the soil and water. When powerful insecticides such as DDT enter the ecosystem, they can do tremendous harm to animals. Farm workers have died from handling strong herbicides incorrectly. And just think, we are eating these chemicals on our food! Organic food is better for the environment in all of these ways. Finally, organic and sustainable agriculture does not take more from the earth and the earth can naturally produce. Non-sustainable agriculture uses many gallons of furl to produce a single bushel of wheat, corn or rice. Using heavy machines is unsustainable because eventually our petroleum reserves will be used up. Growing food in a sustainable ensures that our food supply will be safe for many generations to come. We will not need to depend on oil or oil producing nations in order to feed ourselves. In conclusion, I believe you will agree with me when I say that organic fruits and vegetables are superior to others in many ways. By eating them you are eating a more nutritious, sustainable and environmentally friendly
